Welcome to Sinthana
Community Learning Centre
The Sinthana Project takes its name and foundations from the Chichewa verb ‘Kusinthana’, meaning ‘to exchange’. This project aims to provide opportunities and space for community members to meet and develop their skills. In the spirit of ‘Sinthana’ there is always an opportunity to exchange skills and share learning both within the village, nationally and internationally. We believe that education and opportunity are key to successful community development and we hope to provide a platform to encourage this. To provide learning and development opportunities for those who left school early or were unable to attend at all is as important to the community as supporting and complementing school curriculums and classroom activities
On this website you can learn more about the project, our activities and volunteering opportunities.
Education & Programs
Learn about our top 3 programs at Sinthana. But this is not all we do! Check out the Education & Programs page for more information

Nursery School
Our nursery school runs three classes and has over 120 kids. The kids are three, four and five years old. Every class has its own syllabus and is being thought by two teachers. We do a lot of singing and dancing and in that way learn the kids, for example, English, numbers and letters. Furthermore, we mix the 3 hours of lessons with lots of playtime. The nursery school is the biggest program of our project and determines our rhythm of the day.

Library

Sinthana started with Brighten’s dream to have more people reading books; for their own entertainment, but also for educational purposes. It all started with a small library in the village’s primary school. But now, 16 years later, we have our own library at the project. Come and visit us to read, borrow, exchange, or donate a book! Our books are mostly English, but we also have some in Chichewa.

ICT Lessons
The digital age is not leaving Malawi untouched and the people in our community should be able to learn how to use computers. We therefore started with ICT lessons in 2011. Now the people of Cape Maclear don’t have to travel anymore to learn computer skills. We mainly run 2 courses: a course about general computer usage and Microsoft word, and a course about Microsoft Excel. The latter is an important one for our teenagers that plan to go to college.
